President Obama has spoken up for Tibet in the past, criticising the crackdowns on peaceful protests in Tibet in March 2008 and praising the Dalai Lama when the Tibetan spiritual leader was awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal in 2007.
President Obama has said this of Tibet:
“If Tibetans are to live in harmony with the rest of China’s people, their religion and culture must be respected and protected. Tibet should enjoy genuine and meaningful autonomy.”
